The Hon Peter Dutton MP
Minister for Immigration and Border Protection

Australia is a prosperous multicultural nation which has welcomed migrants for generations.

We recognise the strong contribution that migration has made to our country and there
is strong community support for new arrivals through the Government’s visa streams who
want to participate in the Australian way of life.
There are great opportunities in Australia for people with skills and drive to succeed and our
immigration programme is designed to meet the changing needs of our diverse country.
Australia’s long history of settling migrants began at the end of World War II. Since then, we
have welcomed more than 7.5 million to our country – including 800,000 people under the
           Refugee and Humanitarian Programme.

Australia’s visa and migration programmes provide multiple avenues for people to visit, stay
           and work in Australia.

Australia’s skilled migration and temporary visa programmes fill local skills shortages,
increase investment and encourage talented people to work and live in Australia.
Last year the Government introduced reforms to the Significant Investor Visa (SIV) and
introduced the new Premium Investor Visa. The enhanced SIV arrangements will help
Australia’s long-term economic future by boosting investment in emerging enterprises,
creating new jobs and promoting local commercialisation of innovative research
           and development.

Work and Holiday Visa programmes enable young people to live and travel in Australia for
up to two years with short term study and work options available. It’s a great way to learn
           about another culture.

The Student Visa programme allows non-citizens to study in internationally recognised
centres of learning – almost 300,000 overseas students came to Australia in 2014-15.
I hope that you find the information in the latest edition of The Australian Immigration
           Book useful and informative.
I also encourage you to further investigate your options to migrate
to Australia on a temporary or permanent basis, by visiting the
Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s website at www.
                                   border.gov.au.
If you decide to make Australia your destination of choice I am sure
you will enjoy the lifestyle our nation has to offer.
